Day 68 - Normal Service Will Be Resumed Shortly

Text to Rosie:

Hi. Given the difficult circumstances, what are you doing for Sam's birthday next week?

🤞We might actually get away with it this year.

Text from Rosie:

Not sure sis. To be honest, money is tight. You couldn't lend me £50 could you? X

As soon as I saw the word 'sis', I knew she was after something. John was going to go mental when he looked at our bank transactions and saw that she hadn't paid back any of the original money, never mind if he saw that I'd loaned her more again! The situation was starting to get a bit tricky.😬
     I tried to ignore it.

Text from Rosie:

Not sure if you saw the text I sent you earlier but I was wondering if you had £50 to spare to help me give Sam a good birthday??? You were paid yesterday weren't you?X

First of all, 'earlier'??? She sent the text fifteen minutes earlier. Second of all,  'spare'??? Third of all, he had a new bike last week.  Ffs!  AND another thing: Rosie seemed to be keeping better track of my paydays than I actually was!!!

While he hadn't completely moved on from the bin situation (avidly researching the local position on the opening of recycling plants all morning) John's new favourite topic was the easing of the lockdown rules. After yesterday's low mood, I was strangely reassured by the return of his ranty, grouchy disposition. His favourite phrases were:
  • Accident waiting to happen
  •  Irresponsible and incompetent government
  •  Inevitable second wave
  •  Boris Fucking Johnson
  •  Idiots flocking to the beaches
It's not often that I say this, but I had to agree with him. Suddenly life felt scary and uncertain. This would open a whole new Pandora's box that we weren't ready to face. It started with Cleo telling me that her friends were planning on meeting in the park on Monday, as it was now 'ok'. I poured John a nice glass of  Rioja and decided not to mention it for the time being. Then, I made the fateful mistake of doing something that I should never do on a Saturday: opening my work emails. Victoria had called us all into the office this week. She told us to await further information and 'instructions'.😱

At times like these, I REALLY wish I hadn't seen so many Horror/ Dystopian/ Zombie Apocalypse box sets on Netflix.       As recent news images started to flash onto our screens like the opening titles of 'Dawn of the Dead', my brain automatically fast-forwarded to those inevitable scenes just before the closing credits start to roll. I've read enough books and seen enough drama of this genre to know how it will end; with me probably having to engage in an unspeakable sex act with some gormless trolleyboy behind the 'Click and Collect', in exchange for a packet of Cream Crackers!      My hubby, who was full of big talk about 'self sufficiency' and home grown tomatoes a couple of weeks ago, is already rapidly losing the plot, so make no mistake about it -  when the shit hits the fan, it'll be down to me to do whatever I have to do for the family. Even if the selfish bastards don't particularly deserve it! With a bit of luck, we have a long way

January - Hello 2021!

Not gonna lie, I always find emerging from my Christmas cocoon to be a challenge. But this year ....... dear God!😩      It had been a very strange time for the family. After months of having this thing hanging over us like an executioner's guillotine, we actually had  it! Having endured John's almost constant hysteria - his persistent worrying, obsessive disinfecting and pathological fear of the world and its residents - we had succumbed to the virus anyway. And most importantly of all, we had survived and come out the other side. Don't get me wrong, coronavirus isn't to be recommended. It wasn't pleasant. But like all those things in life that you manage to survive, there's always a plus side to be found. Apart from John FINALLY having to stop worrying about catching the bloody thing and accepting that the virus particles had actually outwitted him, I managed to lose a great deal of the weight that I'd piled on during the lockdown of 2020. This meant that
